CHAPTER 16
Kathleen rushed down the stairs early the following morning. She found Irene and Kathleen feeding the crew for the day. “Good morning,” Kathleen called as she took her seat. Her eyes searched out Rachel who now turned and smiled at her.
As everyone ate their breakfast, Kathleen kept her eyes from straying to look at Rachel. She understood that not everyone would accept their relationship and if they had to keep it a secret, they would. Before she stepped out the side door, Kathleen stopped with her hat in her hand. “I’ll stop by in a while to check up on you,” she said with a wink.
“What makes you think I need checking up on?” Rachel asked standing there with her hand on a hip before she winked at the woman she had fallen in love with. Kathleen’s smile returned to her face and she left the house on cloud nine.
“You two aren’t fooling anyone,” a voice said from behind Rachel.
She turned on her heels and saw Irene standing in the doorway holding baby Walter. “I uh….” was all she could manage to say, but her face told Irene all she needed to know.
“I guess you two admitted your feelings for each other?” Irene asked and watched Rachel’s head nod. She handed Walter to Rachel. “I’m very happy for both of you,” she said with a sigh. “Not everyone is going to feel the same way so you have to be careful.” Rachel opened her mouth, but Irene held up her hand. “I see the way you look at each other and if anyone else looks closely they will see it too.”
Rachel sat down in a chair. “What do you think Stan would say?” she asked softly.
“He doesn’t know about Katie. He’s happy that Katie finally has a friend. I’m not sure he could imagine two women falling in love with each other.”
“Oh,” she said quietly as a tear fell onto her cheek. “Should I leave?”
“If you left, you would break Katie’s heart.”
“What do we do then?” Rachel felt as if her world was falling apart again. She was so happy last night and now she had no idea what to do.
“All I ask is that you two be careful.”
Rachel nodded and laid the now sleeping Walter in the cradle in the kitchen.
A few hours later, Kathleen came into the house in search of Rachel. “She’s upstairs changing Walter,” Irene said seeing Kathleen’s searching eyes.
Kathleen charged up the stairs and stood in the doorway watching Rachel with her son. “Hi.”
Rachel turned. “Hello.”
“What’s wrong?” Kathleen asked moving closer.
Rachel now explained what Irene had told her this morning. “We have to be careful and maybe you shouldn’t keep coming back to the house during the day.”
Kathleen stood there in a daze. She finally found someone to truly love and now she was going to have to pretend that they were just friends. “I understand,” she said before leaving the room, but she really didn’t understand.
Kathleen stayed away from the house for the rest of the day.
